Establish a Strong GPA

Your first semester of college sets the stage for your GPA. It is easier to maintain a high GPA than it is to improve on a low GPA.

  • Attend every class period
  • Attend professors’ office hours
  • Visit the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) for tutoring in Math, Writing and Study Strategies

Build Time Management and Study Skills

Learning how to manage your time is a fundamental skill necessary to be successful throughout your time in college.  Starting your first year is absolutely essential to building strong positive habits.

  • Attend workshops through CAE
  • Register for CAE 101; College Success Strategies (2 credits)

Stay Connected to your Academic Adviser

  • Be an active participant in choosing courses and registering for classes
  • Ask lots of questions

Get Involved on Campus

  • Read your e-mail-especially the Campus Update that announces activities and events on campus each week
  • Follow the Events Calendar on Badgerweb that posts all activities and events on campus
  • Attend activities sponsored by Student Government, Campus Programming Board and Student Involvement
  • Identify a club or activity that interests you and attend call out meetings
  • “Friend” The Resume Doctor on FaceBook to learn about professional development events happening on campus

Get to Know your Professors

  • Visit¬† office hours and discuss your academic and personal goals
  • Be an active participant¬† in class

Identify Professional Areas of Interest and Study

  • Begin the SHC on-line assessment Focus 2 (access code: Badger)
  • Register for SAS 201; Career Decision Making and earn 1 credit
  • Interview professionals in your field of interest and inquire about job shadowing. CLICK HERE for an instructional webinar on how to set up an informational interview with a professional
  • Work, volunteer and/or do community service

Prepare a Strong Draft of your Resume
